The debate between Paul Grossman and Stephen Porges (something that is largely a xenophoboia of small differences that can only exist in scientific opinions and religious wars) has recently (2026) exploded in everyone's face, and there are several
attempts to reconcile the issue without throwing out any babies with the bathwater.
The conceptual gaps in PolyVagal Theory have been visible and debated with somewhat less (but not zero) blood being spilled for well over a decade. I wrote this essay as I started to diverge from PolyVagal (and any other neurological model) to focus on the processes of communication / biosemiotics.
